Have you ever paused to ponder what the word, "Green" means?
Green is one of the traditional seven colours and belongs to the group of chromatic colours. It is a powerful and dominant colour. It is not an over statement to say that Green is the colour of the Earth! Another significant colour is blue, which associated with the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Let's have a look at the tiny green shoots of life bursting through the earth at the beginning of each season of growth, bringing new life and hope, the promise of an end of leanness and hunger, the prospect of well filled barns and food for the beasts and men. The appearing of the tender green shoots connotes "Hope".

In Gen. 1:30, God gave foilage of plants to animals, birds and all creeping creatures. This foliage of plants is translated with Yarag. In the O.T.Yarag literally "Pale" is used to refer to Green (CF The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia, Vol. 1, P 732). Green therefore is the food of the living creatures mentioned above.
In Gen. 9:3, God gave every living thing that moves and man, the foliage of plants as food. Hence, the large proportion of human food includes vegetables, green fruits of which some are allowed to ripe and green plants. And the green plants. And the green plants also serve as meicine to man. The green colour then is the colour of sustenance to man.
Green colour confirms indubitably that the earth planet as against other planets has life in it. Green is the symbol of life.
Green is considered to be the colour of "innocence" as is implied in Christ's query to the mourning women of Jerusalem on his way to Calvary. "For if the do these things to green tree, what shall be done in the dry"? (Luke 23:31).
Green colour is looked upon as a sign of youthfulness. "To love to play things well as a child, to lead an adventurous and honourable youth and to settle down when when the time arrives into a 'Green' and smiling age, is to be a good artist in life and deserve well of yourself and your neighbours" (Robert Louis Stevenson). Green can be the symbol of whatever it is in our lives that helps to make our suffering bearable.
The ancient people of Assyria, Babylon and Egypt attached great importance to colour language because of their developed artistic skill. The carrying of young green fronds by Christians on Palm Sunday signifies victory relative to the greenery carried by people which signifies Christ's Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem (Mark 11:1-10).
Green represents fertility. Fertility rites generally involve the symbolic use of green, growing things particularly as man grows more civilised and provides substitutes for human sacrifices whether fresh green palm fronds or in colder climes, glossy evergreen holly with its bright red berries.
Green connotes peace, The dove returned to Noah's ark after the deluge with a green leaf in its mouth, indicating complete tranquility.
Green represents love, which does not decay or fade.
Green embodies man's hope of earthly immortality through the continuance of his line of all that is necessary to nourish his own life and expectation, hence we say green or evergreen memeoryof somebody or of an event or thing.For example, the thought of you remains "evergreen" in my mind. This signifies immortality.
May be you have gotten your "Green Card" overseas. What does it mean to you if you have gotten one? Nationality of course!
At the traffic jam, when you see the Green Signal, it means the way is clear, Go ahead!
Relax and have a little rest near the base of the sea shore and watch the green shoots that ornament the environment, you count yourself a happy man to have been opportuned to observe and deserve well of yourself the colour of green surroundings, the source of virtues of our daily lives in abundance.
In religious service, what does it indicate when the Priest wears green vestment for offering sacrifice at mass?. It simply indicates no lent, no advent, no funeral or passion, ritual and no bad omen.
Green is the colour of protection. Soldiers, reptiles, insects, sea birds, animals, snakes camouflage themselves with green colouration to prevent attack or injury from enemies or predators.
Then the thought of National Campaign; The Operation Feed the Nation or Green Resolution. This green power to nourish and sustain life through tilling thee ground connotes well what Patrick Kavanagh an Irish Poet wrote:
"Sometimes when the sun comes through the sap,
These men know God the Father in a tree,
The Holy Spirit is the rising sap,
And Christ will be the Green Leaves that will come, At Easter from the sealed and guarded tomb".
Then it is clear that Green is the embodiment of virtues.
