1st READING (Amos
THEME: Against those
who buy up the poor for money
2nd READING (1st
Timothy 2: 1-8)
should be prayers offered for everyone to God, who wants everyone to be saved.
GOSPEL (Luke 16:
THEME: You cannot
be the slave of God and of money.
The first reading warns us to be careful on the means we make
our wealth. Amos condemned the idea of cheating the needy and the poor in order
to be rich. The Lord himself detests such and he has sworn saying, “Never will
I forget a single thing you have done”. Being rich is never a sin. It only
becomes a sin when you get your riches through unjust means. Be careful!
In the second, Paul commends selfless prayers. A selfless
prayer is an unselfish prayer. A prayer in which you remember the needy and
your neighbours. Whenever you pray, do not limit your prayer points to only
your needs, rather remember others especially your leaders and rulers in
various levels of the society because that is the best thing you can do for
them. Never pray against your leader, rather ask God to guide them because the
souls of leaders are in the hands of God.
In the Gospel, we were presented with the dishonest steward
who used his master’s wealth to prepare a better place for himself. Jesus did
not praise him for squandering his master’s money, rather he commended his
astuteness i.e. being clever and perceptive. Like the dishonest steward, we
should always be astute and use our material thing like money to get eternal
life. We can achieve this by using our wealth to help the poor and the needy,
paying our tithes.
Money has two natures. And the nature it presents to you
depends on your intension:
1. THE GOOD NATURE: Money is very good and can help you to make eternity. Money reveals its good nature when you use it to help the needy and to praise God and also when you don’t make it your master. Never allow the god of money (Mammon) to control you.
2. THE BAD NATURE: Money is also the root of all evil. Money reveals its bad nature when you make it your master i.e. when you allow it to control you.
MONEY FIRST, RATHER PUT GOD FIRST. USE YOUR RICHES TO GET ETERNITY FOR YOURSELF
AND NOT CONDEMNATION.
